Madame Tussauds (by Samoli Maria)
Marie Tussaud was born as Marie Grosholtz in
1761 in Strasbourg, France. Her mother worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Philippe
Curtius in Bern, Switzerland, who was a physician skilled in wax modelling.
Curtius taught Tussaud the art of wax modelling.

Tussaud created her first wax figure, of
Voltaire, in 1777. Other famous people she modelled at that time include
Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Benjamin Franklin.
By 1835 Marie had settled down in Baker Street,
London, and opened a museum. This part
of the exhibition included victims of
the French Revolution and newly created figures of murderers and other
criminals. The name is often credited to a contributor to Punch in 1845, but
Marie appears to have originated it herself, using it in advertising as early
as 1843.
Madame Tussaud's wax museum has now grown to
become a major tourist attraction in London, incorporating (until 2010) the London Planetarium in its west
wing. It has expanded and will expand with branches in Amsterdam, Bangkok,
Berlin, Blackpool, Hollywood, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, New York City, Shanghai,
Sydney, Vienna and Washington, D.C. Today's wax figures at Tussauds include
historical and royal figures, film stars, sports stars and famous murderers.
Known as "Madame Tussauds" museums they are owned by a leisure
company called Merlin Entertainments, following the acquisition of The Tussauds
Group in May 2007.

Tips for London travellers (by Maria Samoli)
Some of our classmates have recently visited London. We asked them to give us some advice in case we want to travel too. Here is what they told us! Click here to view a notice board!
The British Museum (by Georgia Berki)
The British museum is a museum for human history and culture in London. There are seven
million of different items in there for people to admire. Some collections are
the biggest and most impressive and come from all around the world, depicting
and documenting the story of human culture from it s beginning until today.
The museum was founded at 1753
and opened the doors for the public at 12/1/1757. The museum collections were based
primarily on the naturalist and scientist SIR HANS SLOANE’s private collection.
The place where the museum was built is Montagu House. It has been there for the
last 257 years. There have been expansions over the last century which where
basically relied on the British empire and
colonial items as well. Although no-one can deny that the British museum is an
amazing achievement, it is important to mention that many countries are
displeased because part of their history is in there. Arguments between Britain and
those countries never end. Who is going to win? Let’s hope as Greeks that we will
get back what belongs to us.

LONDON EYE (by Danai Kladou)
The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London.
Why do they consider it the most famous tourist attraction? You can
easily find the answer by watching the amazing pictures below. It’s an amazing ride up and down the city of London. During
the tour you can enjoy the panoramic view being seated in a passenger capsule.
The view is really breathtaking.
The London
Eye has 32 passenger capsules in
total and its number represents the 32 London boroughs. They are huge weighing 10
tonnes each and can carry up to 25 people.
The London
Eye is one of the most spectacular sights in London, especially at Christmas. During Christmas period a
variety of festive flights are organized in the wheel.
Also, a Christmas Market is set at the London
Eye where you can buy unique hand-crafted gifts and unusual Christmas presents
under the sounds of Christmas music.
What is more, the impressive firework displays
on the night of New Year’s Eve make
the London Eye unforgettable to people. Fireworks explode for ten minutes
lighting up the sky and being visible from most of central London.
And of course,
the London Eye is the best location to celebrate the Valentine’s Day. Couples can choose different flights and enjoy
drinking champagne or eating chocolate in the capsules.
An amazing sight resort with a lot of unforgettable moments. As life
goes by there are many moments which are
worth to live and that is the ‘’London Eye’’!!!!!

it is open every day until 8:30. Some
days are excluded! Visit the official site to check it. http://www.londoneye.com/

you can buy a ticket from the ticket
office which is outside the wheel or you can book it online, which is
preferable, and then take it from the
ticket dispensing machine located in the ticket office

you can get there by tube and stop to
Waterloo station , which is the closest, or Embankment, Charing Cross and
Westminster stations.
·
It is accessible to disabled.
·
There is a gift shop opposite the
ticket office entrance and two cafes, one opposite the gift shop and one inside
the County Hall.
