Madame Tussauds (by Samoli Maria)
Marie Tussaud was born as Marie Grosholtz in
1761 in Strasbourg, France. Her mother worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Philippe
Curtius in Bern, Switzerland, who was a physician skilled in wax modelling.
Curtius taught Tussaud the art of wax modelling.

Tussaud created her first wax figure, of
Voltaire, in 1777. Other famous people she modelled at that time include
Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Benjamin Franklin.
By 1835 Marie had settled down in Baker Street,
London, and opened a museum. This part
of the exhibition included victims of
the French Revolution and newly created figures of murderers and other
criminals. The name is often credited to a contributor to Punch in 1845, but
Marie appears to have originated it herself, using it in advertising as early
as 1843.
Madame Tussaud's wax museum has now grown to
become a major tourist attraction in London, incorporating (until 2010) the London Planetarium in its west
wing. It has expanded and will expand with branches in Amsterdam, Bangkok,
Berlin, Blackpool, Hollywood, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, New York City, Shanghai,
Sydney, Vienna and Washington, D.C. Today's wax figures at Tussauds include
historical and royal figures, film stars, sports stars and famous murderers.
Known as "Madame Tussauds" museums they are owned by a leisure
company called Merlin Entertainments, following the acquisition of The Tussauds
Group in May 2007.

The British Museum (by Georgia Berki)
The British museum is a museum for human history and culture in London. There are seven
million of different items in there for people to admire. Some collections are
the biggest and most impressive and come from all around the world, depicting
and documenting the story of human culture from it s beginning until today.
The museum was founded at 1753
and opened the doors for the public at 12/1/1757. The museum collections were based
primarily on the naturalist and scientist SIR HANS SLOANE’s private collection.
The place where the museum was built is Montagu House. It has been there for the
last 257 years. There have been expansions over the last century which where
basically relied on the British empire and
colonial items as well. Although no-one can deny that the British museum is an
amazing achievement, it is important to mention that many countries are
displeased because part of their history is in there. Arguments between Britain and
those countries never end. Who is going to win? Let’s hope as Greeks that we will
get back what belongs to us.
